History |
Picture postcards need not be merely fleeting mementos of pleasant days spent on or near a canal. They can easily be collected to show the history, development and beauty of our inland navigations. Within a short space of time an attractive collection can be built up that will delight and fascinate your family and friends and extend your own interest in, and knowledge of, British canals and their surrounding countrysides and towns.
In 1978 a group of postcard enthusiasts formed the Canal Card Collectors Circle and the membership is expanding. A quarterly newsletter - "The Gongoozler" - keeps members in touch with one another and contains articles on canals and postcards.
One of the difficulties of collecting modern cards is that they are often on sale only in the vicinity of the view depicted. To overcome this problem the secretary can supply a selection of modern cards on approval.
Current Circle projects include the compiling of lists of all canal postcards, both old and modern, which have come into the possession of our members. By this means unknown views can be identified and queries answered.
Our annual Cardmeet is held over a weekend each summer at a canal location and includes talks, visits to places of interest and the opportunity to meet other members, swop or purchase cards and exchange ideas and experiences. Recent Cardmeets have been held at Chirk, Devizes, Crickhowell, Worksop, Nottingham and Gloucester.
Membership costs £7.00 per year (pound sterling) or $14.00 per year (U.S.Dollars). Subscriptions are due on 1st January, but the subscription of anyone joining after 1st October lasts until the end of the following year.
If you wish, go to our online membership application. It is printable through your web browser and you can mail it directly to our membership secretary with your subscription (dues).
