It was a bit of a worry beforehand - I began to wonder what else could go wrong with the organisation - but apart from the unexpected very loud 'music' in the White Hart on the Friday night (which the new proprietors had not told me of) it all went very smoothly. It was good to welcome one of our American members, Ray Hahn, and to see so many friends in my own home and garden on Friday afternoon and I am grateful to Joyce Greenwood for all the help she gave me during the weekend. I could not have managed without her!
Tony Condor's tour of the canals around the Severn Estuary was most enjoyable, and although only one of the "Friends of the National Waterways," who were invited to join us, could do so. I was asked to write it up for their newsletter and Tony will probably be asked to repeat it for them some time in the future. Thank you, Tony, for showing it all to us, first.
Marion Stearman took photographs all through the day. The one on
the left shows Ken Parris, Fred Stearman, Joyce Greewood and one of the volunteers from the Hereford and Gloucester Canal Society at the restoration site at Over, just outside Gloucester. (Yes, we did have to wear 'Hard-hats' while we were there; we also met David Moore's two daughters who were volunteers on this site.) [The second photo] shows Ken [with] Jo and Ian Wilson leaving the Berkeley Arms at Purton before we went on to view the Barge Graveyard.
During the A.G.M., in the Museum's new schoolroom, we had a chance to look at each others albums of cards and photographs. When the room was emptied people took their albums back to their cars. Margaret and Ken Wood picked up all my albums and one other, taking them back to their car from which I received them later in the day. But the postcard album is not mine. It is a grey covered tall album containing folded pages which hold six cards each side; the contents include cards from the Glos. and Sharpness, the Mon. and Brec., the Thames and Severn and the Bude Canals. A small label on the front lists these and has a symbol at the bottom right-hand corner. If the owner of this album will contact me I will post it back to him or her.
Thank you all for coming to Gloucestershire and for giving me such a happy week-end.
