Mumblings of the Chairman . . .

Dear Members,

I have received an invite to represent our Circle at a British Waterways Inaugural meeting, held at the London Canal Museum on Wednesday, 22nd of July. I R. S. V. P.ed to say that I would be there.

When I arrived I wondered if it was the right place. It looked as if every other man there was wearing a suit! (There was no a T-shirt to be seen.) It was a good job that I put on a tie under my own bomber jacket.

The meeting was of representatives of 'User Groups' of the canals and I was very bucked at the idea of our Circle taking part in such a big get-together of Waterway and allied groups, the professionals and the volunteers all under one roof. (All the fish in one po(u)nd!)

It was great to see all the different organisations that had a member or representative there - - - there were fishing people, the naturalists, the R. S. P. B., the disabled groups, and even the walker, the cyclists, etc. alongside the boaters and their friends.

All I hope is that when this group meets again for its first A.G.M. next year we can put our heads together and come up with some workable ideas that will benefit the waterways and 'all that sail on them.'

You will be pleased to hear that our members in Hawaii have answered my request for the meaning of the name of their house (and boat). It is an amalgam of the names of their son and daughter in Hawaiian. Jim, is called Kimo and Mary Lou is called Malia in Hawaiian. Putting these two name together produces 'Kimalia'. So it really means 'Jim and Mary live here.' It is still a very nice sounding word though; I'm glad I asked.

It's me again, Ken Parris
