Cardmeet: A Preview - 1. Slaithwaite

The card of Slaithwaite show a 1950's view published by Frith. The earliest date for this is suggested by the Austin A30 just visible in the far distance. This car was first shown at the 1951 Motor Show and, given the post-war restricting on car sales, may have been an unlikely sight in Slaithwaite for a year or two afterwards. The canal through the village was filled in sometime in the 1950's. Carr Lane, the road in front of the shops, was widened, and a grass area with a line of cherry trees replaced the canal.

This is a likely place to visit at Cardmeet, especially as it is only a couple miles from Tunnel End, Marsden, where a Visitor Center is under construction as a base for trips into Standedge Tunnel.

Unfortunately, due to the reluctance to alter the roads, the canal is going back much narrower and at a lower level than the original, so that the view of Slaithwaite from a boat and visa-versa is likely to be difficult. Moorings will be provided below the lock (22E) in the distance and above lock 23E, some 100 yards behind the photographer.
